LUBBOCK, Texas - The road back to the NCAA Championships begins tomorrow morning for the 21st ranked Texas Tech men's golf team as they tee off the spring season on the big island of Hawaii.
"We are really excited to get back on the course after a long layoff," said Texas Tech head coach Greg Sands. "The road to the NCAA's begins this week and it's important that we have the right mentality. Our seniors are going to be key for us in the spring and I am looking forward to see how it all plays out. This tournament will be a challenge but it is one that I think we are ready to embrace."
The Red Raiders will join a 20-team field at the 21st Annual Ameri Ari Invitational hosted by the University of Hawaii-Manoa and the University of Hawaii-Hilo. The tournament gets underway with a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. (CT) on the Waikoloa Kings' Course in Kona. Fans will be able to follow the action live beginning with the first round on Tuesday all the way through the third and final round on Friday at www.golfstat.com. Rounds two and three will also begin with a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. (CT) on Thursday and Friday.
Texas Tech is one of four Big 12 teams participating in the tournament alongside No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 7 Texas and Colorado. The tournament also features No. 1 UCLA, No. 5 Georgia Tech, No. 11 Stanford and No. 24 Washington.
The Red Raiders will compete as a team with seniors Matt Smith, Nils Floren and Will Griffin along with junior Tyler Weworksi and freshman Chandler Rusk. Junior Brian Scherer will compete in the tournament as an individual and his scores will not count towards Tech's team total.
Smith and Floren were Tech's top golfers during the fall as Smith led the group with a 72.1 average-per round with Floren right behind him at 72.6.
