LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's newest Red Raiders shined in the first official scrimmage of spring practice in front of about 400 fans inside Jones AT&T Stadium earlier today.
A picture perfect day (sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 70s), set the scene for the scrimmage that covered a total of 113 plays, with both sides of the ball rising to the challenge.
Afterward, head coach Tommy Tuberville seemed pleased with his team's progress. "We saw a lot of improvement from our defenses in the first half today," said Tuberville. "We still gave up too many big plays and that is something that we have to correct. But, I was pleased with their performance and the way they have improved. After seven days, I think we have made some headway but it is going to be important for us to develop some leadership."
Today's scrimmage was highlighted by newcomers Ronnie Daniels (freshman running back from Albuquerque), Blake Dees (freshman linebacker from Spanish Fort, Ala.), Michael Brewer (freshman quarterback from Lake Travis) and senior running back Aaron Crawford.
Crawford led the group with 118 yards rushing on 18 attempts while Daniels racked up two touchdown runs and ended the day with 67 yards on the ground and 22 yards receiving. Dees ended the day with eight tackles and picked up one huge 4th-and-1 tackle for a loss that stalled an offensive drive. Michael Brewer threw for 15 yards and one touchdown pass to freshman Derek Edwards (Brenham, Texas). Junior quarterback Seth Doege, who entered spring practice with the lead in the quarterback race, led the offensive unit with 246 yards passing along with three touchdowns.
"I though Doege played pretty well today," remarked Tuberville. "We are expecting a lot from him. I intentionally put him against the wind just to see how he would handle it - and he did well."
Defensively, Sam Fehoko paced the unit with nine total tackles while D.J. Johnson registered an interception and Russell Polk picked up a fumble by Crawford.
