LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech sophomore Jamodrick McGruder has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week, conference officials announced Monday.
It marks the second consecutive week that a Red Raider has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week, as first baseman Stephan Hagen was honored last Monday.
It marks the first time since 1997 - the first season of the Big 12 Conference - that Texas Tech players have been awarded Big 12 Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks.
Oklahoma State right-handed pitcher Brad Propst was named Pitcher of the Week and Texas A&M's Trey Bratsen was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the week in voting by a panel of media covering the Big 12 Conference.
McGruder (Mesquite, Texas), who is among the Big 12 leaders in nearly every offensive statistical category this season, continued his stellar sophomore season last week batting .500 (7-for-14) with three extra-base hits and a .650 on-base percentage and a .786 slugging percentage.
McGruder finished the week reaching base safely in 9-of-11 plate appearances.
He went 5-for-9 in Texas Tech's series victory over Nebraska. His top performance against the Huskers came in the middle game of the series going 3-for-4 with a triple, RBI and two walks. He finished the series going 1-for-2 with a double, run scored and two walks.
He began the week going 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI against Dallas Baptist while leading Tech to a come-from-behind win at Patriot Field. McGruder tied the game at 5-5 with a two-run single against DBU and then tied the game again in the top of the ninth inning with an RBI double to center field.
McGruder leads Texas Tech batting .389 (35-for-90) with 21 runs, three doubles, four triples, 19 RBI, 17 walks, 12 hit-by-pitch, a .511 slugging percentage and a .529 on-base percentage with 17-of-21 stolen bases.
NOTES: Texas Tech has now had 24 Big 12 Player of the Week selections... Tech has had at least one Big 12 Player of the Week each season except 2009... marks the sixth year Tech has had at least two player of the week honors (2004 had the most with five)... this year is the first time Tech has had multiple player of the week honors since 2008.
