KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Texas Tech sophomore guard Chynna Brown has been named the Big 12 Conference Sixth Man of the Year, while junior Kierra Mallard was selected All-Big 12 second team and senior Teena Wickett and sophomore Casey Morris were named honorable mention. Sophomore Monique Smalls was selected to the All-Defensive Team. All awards were voted on by the league coaches and announced today by the conference office.
A spark off the bench for the Lady Raiders, Brown averaged 8.8 points and 3.7 rebounds, while shooting 38.3 percent from the field, 32 percent from three-point range and 86.2 percent from the free throw line during Big 12 play. She has played in all 30 games this year with two starts. During league play, Brown scored a career-high 22 points versus Missouri and scored in double figures in seven games, including five straight.
This is the fifth year the Big 12 has given out the Sixth Man of the Year award and the first time a Lady Raider has received it. Brown shares the honor with Texas A&M's Maryann Baker.
This is the first time a Texas Tech student-athlete has received one of the Big 12 Conference's top postseason awards since Dominic Seals was named the Newcomer of the Year in 2008. Prior to that, Erin Grant (2003) and Plenette Pierson (2000) both received Big 12 Freshman of the Year accolades.
Mallard was selected to the All-Big 12 second team after averaging 10.9 points and 7.1 boards during the conference season. She has started 29 of 30 games and started all 16 Big 12 contests. This is Mallard's second postseason honor as she was named to the All-Freshman Team in 2009.
Morris and Wickett received their first postseason honors by being named honorable mention All-Big 12. During Big 12 action, Wickett averaged 9.6 points and 5.1 rebounds, while Morris averaged 9.2 points and 3.1 rebounds. Morris has started all 30 games this season, while Wickett has 26 starts, including 12 Big 12 games.
Starting every game in her career, Smalls picked up her first postseason honor as a member of the All-Defensive Team. In Big 12 games only, Smalls led Tech in steals with 38 as the Lady Raiders ranked second in the conference in steals per game at 9.1.
The Lady Raiders take on Oklahoma State on Tues., March 8, in first round action of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship at 7:30 p.m. at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.
