LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 15 Texas Tech shot its best round so far in the Big 12 Championships on Tuesday, moving up to fourth place entering Wednesday's final round at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
After combining to go 25-over during the first two rounds Monday, the Red Raiders finished with a 1-over 281 card which allowed Tech to slip past Oklahoma by a stroke for fourth place.
Backed by 1-under 69 cards from Chandler Rusk and Matt Smith, Tech's third round was one of several low scores as Oklahoma State and Texas A&M both recorded under-par days to remain atop the tournament leaderboard.
"I'm really proud of how Chandler is playing right now," Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "For this being his first Big 12 tournament, we're obviously excited for the future after the way he's put together three good rounds. He's playing really well, and hopefully he can stay on that path and our guys can put together another low score tomorrow."
Rusk's round moved the redshirt freshman into a tie for fourth overall as he sits 3-over for the tournament, six strokes behind leader Morgan Hoffmann of Oklahoma State. He is joined in the top 10 by Will Griffin, who posted a 1-over 71 card to drop a few spots into a tie for eighth at 5-over.
Tyler Weworski and Nils Floren both added 2-over 74 cards which moved the duo just outside the top 20 as Weworski is tied for 25th at 10-over and Floren is a stroke back in a tie for 29th.
Oklahoma State increased its first day lead with a 10-under third round, moving to 5-over for the tournament and 12 strokes in front of second-place Texas A&M. Texas finished 4-over to remain in third place at 22-over.
The Red Raiders begin the final round at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning. Live results can be found at www.golfstat.com while additional coverage is being provided at www.big12sports.com.
