
Tech Finishes First Day of Big 12 Championships

NORMAN, Okla. - The No. 5 Red Raiders and No. 11 Lady Raiders finished up the first day of the Big 12 Championships held at the John Jacobs Track Complex in Norman Okla., with Chuck Zavala sitting in ninth in the decathlon.
Zavala didn't start the decathlon the way he wanted, but finished it in a good position. The senior sits in ninth after the first day with 3,631 points.
The long jump was the best event of the day for Zavala as he jumped 22'-10" (6.96M). He scored 804 points for his efforts. He cleared 6'-4" (1.93M) and threw 46'-0" (14.02M) in the shot put. His slow start of the day came in the 100M where he ran an 11.79 and was in the bottom half of the field before climbing back. He finished the day running a 53.42 in the 400M.
Michelle Guzman finished the 10,000M in 15th with a time of 36:28.37.
Casey Felton threw 154'-8" (47.14M) in the javelin placing 15th.
Nick Green started competition in the decathlon but didn't clear a height in the high jump. He withdrew from the competition.
Nebraska leads the women's race with 29 points while Oklahoma leads the men's team score with 29 points.
Tech will start competition for day two at 10 a.m. with the multi events, 1 p.m. for field events and 2 p.m. for preliminaries of the running events.
