LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech freshman outfielder/right-handed pitcher David Paiz (Austin, Texas) was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper announced Wednesday. Paiz was one of five two-way players who were selected as multi-position players.
Paiz becomes the eighth Freshman All-American in Texas Tech history. The Red Raiders have produced three Freshman All-America picks the past two seasons, marking the most in program history in consecutive years. Last season Barrett Barnes and Jamodrick McGruder earned the prestigious honor.
Paiz was one of four freshmen in the conference to be named All-Big 12 first team (Utility). He was also named to the All-Big 12 Freshman team by the Big 12 coaches and by College Baseball Daily. In addition,
Paiz was one of only three freshmen in the nation named to the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award Watch List, the award given annually to the nation's top two-way play.
Paiz doubled as Tech's Friday-night starter in Big 12 action and as a starting outfielder who hit in the middle of Tech's lineup for most of the season.
He finished his first collegiate season batting .284 (60-for-211) with 13 doubles, one triple and two home runs with 27 RBI. Paiz started in 56 games for the Red Raiders. On the mound, Paiz went 3-5 with a 6.93 ERA in 17 appearances (9 starts) with one save, 50.2 innings pitched and 34 strikeouts with 17 walks allowed.
Proving his two-way success, Paiz recorded the save and also went 1-for-3 with an RBI against Nebraska (March 27), becoming the first Tech player in over 10 years to post a save and base hit in the same game.
