After a week of training camp and a 184-play scrimmage behind them, the Texas Tech Red Raiders completed their first two-a-day practice on Monday.
The Red Raiders held a morning practice at 8:30 and returned to the practice fields for a second workout from 5:00-6:15.
It's a system that the Texas Tech coaches feel benefits the Red Raiders by maximizing the practice time and repetitions that players receive during training camp.
"It's a chance for us to get out in the heat," defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow said. "The more reps you get, the better you are going to get as a football team, and it helps us get in better condition having two practices a day."
Following their first two-a-day of training camp, head coach Tommy Tuberville said he was pleased with the effort and production he saw from his team.
"It was good day of practice today, and an excellent one on Saturday," Tuberville said.
The Red Raiders spent the majority of their second practice of the day on Monday working in team scenarios, with the live offense facing the live defense. The Red Raiders also spent time focusing on special teams, specifically with the punt-return units.
Austin Zouzalik and DeAndre Washington split the majority of the reps, returning punts from both Ryan Erxleben and Donnie Carona.
Tomorrow, the Red Raiders are scheduled to return to the single-practice format, before another scheduled two-a-day on Wednesday.
Notes:
Still a Two-Man Race:
Despite an impressive showing from freshman Michael Brewer in Saturday's scrimmage, in which he statistically led all quarterbacks in passing, it appears the quartback position is still a two-man battle between Seth Doege and Jacob Karam. The two took the majority of the snaps in practice on Monday.
Offensive coordinator Neal Brown said he is still impressed with what he has seen from Doege throughout camp, but added he still has room to improve.
"He played well," Brown said. "But not as well as he needs to for us to win the way we want to win, but he played well. I'm happy with where he is at after a week."
Tuberville Praises Brewer:
Tommy Tuberville praised freshman quarterback Michael Brewer after practice on Monday afternoon. Tuberville said that Brewer, who went 24-for-38 for 330 yards and 3 touchdowns in the team's scrimmage on Saturday, is one of the most improved players on the squad.
"He's gotten a lot better," Tuberville said. "His arm has gotten a lot stronger, he has got to gain some weight...I thought Saturday was his best day since he got here. He will get a lot better, but I was impressed with the way he threw the ball and the way he handled himself."
Marquez Signs with the New York Mets:
Freshman receiver Bradley Marquez signed a pro baseball contract with the New York Mets yesterday. The product of Odessa, Texas received a $325,000 signing bonus, and will have his education compensated by the Mets' organization. Marquez will commit to football during the fall and spring, and play baseball during the summer months.
Fehoko Still in Limbo:
Defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow said that coaches are still looking for a place to play senior Sam Fehoko. Fehoko has spent camp rotating between the defensive line and linebacker positions.
"We are still trying to find a home and trying to find the best spot to get him on the football field where he can help and contribute."
