It has certainly been a quick start for the Texas Tech Soccer team during the opening week of their 2011 season. The squad racked up shutouts over both Rice and New Mexico State, while newcomer Victoria Esson, a transfer from New Zealand, received Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Furthermore, it marked the second consecutive season that the Red Raiders have opened the year with back-to-back shutout wins.

"We knew we had some work to do this week," head coach Tom Stone said after practice on Thursday. "We had a great week, and we are just trying to improve, based on what we learned about ourselves in preseason. Now with Game 3, the stakes get a little bit higher."
The Rebels enter Fridays contest looking to protect a perfect 1-0 record after shutting out Southern Mississippi 2-0 on Aug. 19. Last season, Texas Tech defeated Ole Miss 2-0 in the St. Mary's Classic tournament.
Meanwhile, Sunday will mark the first ever meeting between the Red Raiders and St. Mary's.
"It's a big weekend for us," senior midfielder Taylor Lytle said. "If we can come in and get a win against Ole Miss and be 3-0, it would definitely boost us to go into a Sunday game and be 4-0. These are two very good teams that we are playing."
It won't be easy, but it certainly is a big weekend for the Red Raiders as they look to remain undefeated before making their first road trip of the season when they face Florida in Gainesville on Sept. 2.
For now though, it's clear their focus though remains on taking care of business this weekend.
"We've got to be ready for them," Stone said.
