The Texas Tech baseball team's fall season is underway and throughout the remainder of the semester, Texas Tech Athletics Communications will take an inside look into the Tech program with Red Raider Profiles on each player.
Aaron Corwin (RHP - 5-11, 165 - R/R - Jr./1L - Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis/Feather River College)
When Dan Spencer thinks back to when he first learned of the name Aaron Corwin he will go back to the days when he was coaching at Oregon State. Spencer knew of Corwin not because of a camp or recruiting opportunities, it is because Corwin lived in the same neighborhood as Spencer.
That relationship helped bring Corwin to Lubbock to play for Spencer many years down the road.
In Corwin's first year playing for Spencer in 2011, he made it more than obvious that his talents, along with his relationship with Spencer, brought him to Texas Tech University.
Corwin's debut season at Texas Tech saw him finish with a 1-0 record in 19 appearances out of the bullpen with a 3.28 ERA and one save in 24.2 innings with 19 strikeouts while opponents batted just .218 against him.
In fact, Corwin, who made 11 appearances in conference play, tallied a 1.12 ERA against Big 12 opponents which gave him the lowest ERA (min. 15 IP) in league play for a Red Raider since 1996. The last time a Tech pitcher had an ERA lower than Corwin was when Zack Stewart notched a 1.06 ERA in Tech's final season playing in the Southwest Conference. No Red Raiders pitcher has recorded an ERA lower than Corwin's during the Big 12 era.
Corwin was not only impressive in middle relief, he also notched a win against Texas State - an NCAA Tournament team in 2011 - which gave the Red Raiders seven newcomers with at least one win. That marked the most newcomers on the Tech pitching staff with a win since 2005 when eight newcomers tallied wins.
His numbers were impressive as a sophomore as he also retired 13-of-19 first batters faced and allowed just 5-of-24 inherited runners to score. Corwin put together seven consecutive outings without allowing a run to score (April 10-30) and allowed only two base hits over 10 outings that spanned a month (April 13-May 15) time frame.
"Aaron pitched really well for us in conference last year," Spencer said. "That year under his belt should help him a bunch. Because now it won't be a new experience, he has pitched against (Texas) A&M, Kansas, Kansas State and has pitched in all types of venues. We look for Aaron to have another very good year and be a good contributor for us out of our bullpen."
In addition, Corwin allowed multiple hits in just two outings during the final two months of the season.
