There isn't a lot that Barrett Barnes hasn't accomplished in two short years during his Texas Tech career. The one big thing that he hasn't been able to do is something he has set his sights directly on this year: Leading Texas Tech to an NCAA Regional appearance.
Barnes, the 2010 Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year and two-time All-Big 12 performer, returns for his junior season with career numbers that are as impressive as any 2012 All-American candidate in the country.
Barnes has played in and started 114 games with a .316 (136-for-431) batting average with 118 runs, 34 doubles, three triples, 24 home runs, 91 RBI, 81 walks, .439 on-base percentage, .575 slugging percentage and is 31-of-36 in stolen bases.
After being named All-Big 12 in back-to-back seasons, Barnes became just the third player in school history to receive Freshman of the Year and to be named all-conference during first his first two seasons with the Red Raiders (Josh Bard, 1997-98; Roger Kieschnick, 2006-07).
Barnes finished second in the Big 12 with 41 walks in 2011 and was tied for third in the league with 10 home runs. As a sophomore, Barnes batted .290 (62-for-214) with 47 runs, 15 doubles, one triple, 38 RBI and grabbed 19-of-21 stolen bases.
His stellar freshman and sophomore seasons have already placed him in 15 school single-season or career record books and he still has his junior season ahead of him.
Many of the Major League Baseball Draft experts consider Barnes to be a high pick in the 2012 draft. When February 2012 rolls around, he will be projected anywhere from a first to fourth round selection.
"He is an exciting player," fourth-year head coach Dan Spencer said. "He can run, he can defend, he has power and he can steal a base. He is a very explosive offensive player. He is a middle of the order bat and he is a great kid on top of all of that."
In addition, Barnes has been awarded 26 individual honors since the start of his career at Texas Tech, including four Freshman All-America honors in 2010.
