TEMPE, Ariz. - Facing a field filled with the country's top teams, the Texas Tech women's' golf team finished in third place Sunday after the opening round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic held at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande.
The Lady Raiders combined to shoot an 8-over 296 thanks in part to 1-over 73 cards from both Gabby Dominguez and Elin Arvidsson. Tech wrapped the day two strokes back of first-day leaders No. 6 LSU and No. 11 Georgia.
Dominguez and Arvidsson finished in a six-way tie for eighth overall, seven strokes back of tournament leader Emilie Burger from Georgia.
They were trailed a stroke back by Kim Kaufman, whose 2-over card was good enough to tie for 14th overall. Mattie Tobey completed Tech's card with a 4-over round. Tech's lone remaining player, Deborah DeVilla, finished 9-over on the day.
Arkansas sits a stroke back of the Lady Raiders in fourth place while Oklahoma State and North Carolina State are four and six swings back, respectively.
The Lady Raiders will once again tee off at 6 a.m. (CT) Monday morning as the second round will begin with a shotgun start.
