LUBBOCK, Texas - Gabby Dominguez and Kim Kaufman led a second-round charge up the leaderboard Sunday as Texas Tech wrapped the first day of the Westbrook Spring Invitational in second place.
After a relative slow start with a 5-over 293 card during the morning round, the Lady Raiders fired a tournament-best 9-under 279 during the afternoon to move just two strokes back of opening-day leader Illinois.
The second-round card marked Tech's lowest 18-hole score in school history, snapping its previous 281 mark set at the 2008 Heather Farr Memorial Classic and 2009 Texas State Challenge.
Both Dominguez and Kaufman played major roles in Tech's success as the duo wrapped the day among the top five individuals with Dominguez even sharing the tournament lead.
The pair both fired 6-under 66 cards during the afternoon session that finished as the field's lowest on the day. The two scores were also the second-lowest in school history, just a stroke back of Kaufman's previous-school record set at the 2009 Texas State Challenge.
Dominguez opened the day with a 1-under card that put her just inside the top 10 individuals. She finished tied with Nora Lucas from Illinois for the tournament lead at 7-under-par. The junior recorded seven birdies during the second round, including five-straight on holes 1-5.
Kaufman, meanwhile, had to recover from a slow start as she shot a 2-over 74 over the first 18 holes. The Clark, S.D. native enters the final round in prime position to continue her season-long trend of finishing among the top 20 individuals in every event.
In addition to the work from Dominguez and Kaufman, Tech got solid rounds from the rest of its lineup as Hannah Arnold finished tied for 27th following 1-over and 3-over rounds while Deborah DeVilla and Elin Arvidsson both wrapped the day 5-over and tied for 34th overall.
Tech and Illinois are the only two schools currently under par as Washington State sits in third place at 3-over with Indiana trailing two strokes back of the Cougars in fourth.
The Lady Raiders wrap the tournament with the final 18 holes Monday morning. Tech is scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start at the Westbrook Village Golf Club in Peoria, Ariz.
