LUBBOCK, Texas - A day after shooting the lowest 18-hole score in school history, Texas Tech recorded the program's best 54-hole card as the Lady Raiders concluded the Westbrook Spring Invitational in second place Monday in Peoria, Ariz.
The Lady Raiders, who fired a 9-under 279 card during Sunday's second round, finished with a 4-under 284 score Monday, moving their 54-hole total to an 8-under 856 that snapped the previous school record of 863 set at the 2008 Heather Farr Memorial.
Even with the performance, Tech could not catch tournament champion Illinois, who fired a 5-under card Monday to hang on for a three-stroke lead. Tech and the Fighting Illini were the only two teams that finished the event under par.
"We had another good day today," Tech head coach JoJo Robertson said. "Illinois played extremely well and was tough to catch. We had some great scores out there and showed that we can shoot under par as a team. Hopefully this will give us some added confidence for the rest of the season."
For the second-straight day, Tech was carried by the combination of Gabby Dominguez and Kim Kaufman as the duo wrapped the tournament tied for second overall with a 9-under, 207 card that marked the lowest 54-hole score in school history. Stephanie Dukes previously held the school record with a 208 at the 2001 Susie Maxwell Classic.
After entering the day just inside the top 10, Kaufman made an early charge and briefly held a share of the tournament lead as she was 3-under on the front nine en route to a 5-under 67 card. Her only blemish was a bogey on the 18th that kept her from matching her second-round score from a day before.
Dominguez, meanwhile, was consistent throughout the round, dropping birdies on the par-5 fifth hole and the par-3 11th that left her 2-under on the day thanks to no bogeys. It was her fifth top-10 finish this season and fourth time among the top five.
Nora Lucas of Illinois held on to her first-day lead to take the individual crown following a 4-under final round that left her 9-under for the tournament and two strokes up on Kaufman and Dominguez.
Hannah Arnold and Elin Arvidsson completed Tech's final-day card as the two finished tied for 27th overall at 6-over following 2-over and 1-over rounds during the final 18 holes. Deborah DeVilla also fired a 4-over card during the final round to finish tied for 40th at 9-over.
The Lady Raiders will take just over two weeks off before returning to the desert for the Notre Dame Clover Cup held March 16-18 at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.
