LUBBOCK, Texas - After Thursday's third round of the NCAA Championships, Kim Kaufman and Gabby Dominguez both have a chance to do what no Texas Tech player has done before - finish among the top 20 individuals at the national tournament.
The two juniors will get their wish Friday as Kaufman, despite her worst round of the tournament, finished tied for 11th while Dominguez moved up over 20 spots to sit tied for 23rd overall with 18 holes remaining.
"Both Kim and Gabby played really well today especially when the course was playing tough," Tech head coach JoJo Robertson said. "This is going to be exciting tomorrow because they are right there in contention. All it is going to take is one more solid round."
With most of the field shooting over par throughout the third round, Kaufman struggled early as well with bogeys on three of her first four holes en route to a 4-over 76 final card that moved her to 3-over for the tournament. The Clark, S.D. native sunk birdies on the front nine's two par-5s at the seventh and ninth holes before recording three bogeys on the back side.

Kaufman enters the final round seven strokes off the lead, which changed hands for the third-straight day as Oklahoma's Chirapat Jao-Javanil and Arizona State's Giulia Molinaro finished tied for first at 4-over. Only six players wrapped the third round with an overall score still under par.
Dominguez, meanwhile, took advantage of the rest of the field's struggles by recording a 1-over score that moved her from a tie for 53rd to start the day to just outside the top 20. She is now 6-over for the tournament and two strokes out from finishing among the top 20 individuals.
The Chilton, Texas native has cut a stroke from her score in each round to now trail Kaufman by just three strokes entering Friday's final round at the Vanderbilt Legends Golf Club in Franklin, Tenn.
The pair will be looking to break Tracy Thomson's record-setting performance from the 1996 NCAA Championships where she finished tied for 39th in Tech's only team appearance in the event. Only Rosalyn Kim in 2010 has advanced to the national tournament since that point.
Both Dominguez and Kaufman will be paired together again Friday when they tee off the final round at 12:45 p.m. from the first hole.
