LUBBOCK, Texas - For the first time since 2004 the Texas Tech baseball program had a pair of American Baseball Coaches Association All- Region selections as junior center fielder Barrett Barnes and junior second baseman Jamodrick McGruder were each named to the All-Midwest second team, the ABCA announced on Wednesday.
It also marks the first ABCA All-Region pick for a Red Raider since 2009 (Chris Richburg) while Barnes and McGruder are the first set of Tech teammates to be named All-Region in the same season since 2004 when Josh Brady and Cameron Blair were both selected.
Barnes (Sugar Land, Texas), who recently signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates after being selected 45th overall in the supplemental first round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft, was a three-time All-Big 12 selection while batting .325 (67-for-206) as a junior with 17 doubles, six triples, nine home runs and 49 RBI with 19-of-20 stolen bases.
Barnes became the third highest MLB Draft pick in Texas Tech history while posting a .319 career batting average with 203 base hits, 171 runs, 51 doubles, nine triples, 33 home runs, 140 RBI, 113 walks and 50-of-56 stolen bases in 169 career games played.
McGruder (Mesquite, Texas) was recently named a NCBWA All-America third team selection as he became just the fourth second baseman in Texas Tech history to earn All-American recognition.
McGruder led the Big 12 Conference in numerous offensive statistical categories and finished the season batting .358 (69-for-193) with 54 runs, six doubles, eight triples, 27 RBI, 45 walks, .500 on-base percentage and ranked fourth in the nation with 39-of-44 stolen bases.
A ninth-round pick in the June MLB Draft, McGruder signed a professional deal with the Seattle Mariners after finishing his career second all-time in both Texas Tech and Big 12 history with 90 stolen bases.
