LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior outfielder Devon Conley (Rio Rancho, N.M.) has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Conley becomes the fourth Red Raider to earn the honor - which started being awarded weekly by the Big 12 Conference in 2011. Conley is the first Tech newcomer to receive the award since May 23, 2011 when right-handed pitcher Duke von Schamann was named the league's top newcomer of the week.
Conley helped lead Tech to three wins last week, including a victory on the road at defending College World Series champion, No. 16 Arizona, and leading the Red Raiders to a series win at home against UT Arlington - taking two of three games from the Mavericks.
He batted .350 (7-for-20) with four RBI and tallied three multi-hit games. Conley currently leads the Big 12 with nine multi-hit games this season. He is the first Red Raider with nine multi-hit games through 17 games of the season since 2008 (Roger Kieschnick - 9).
Conley started his week with a 2-for-4 performance with a double and RBI at No. 16 Arizona last Tuesday. He opened the UT Arlington series going 2-for-5 while Tech claimed an 8-3 victory on Friday night.
He hit safely in each of the three weekend games going 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI in the series finale with the Mavericks on Sunday.
In 17 games this season (17 starts), Conley is batting .329 (23-for-70) with 12 runs, three doubles, one home run, 17 RBI and has three stolen bases.
NOTES:
- Devon Conley is the third Red Raider position player to receive Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors... the last Tech position player to receive the award is Conley's current teammate, Andre Wheeler, who was named the league's top newcomer after the Red Raiders Big 12 opening series in 2011 at Baylor (March 21, 2011) as Wheeler was the top performer for the Red Raiders as a starter in the outfield... Shortstop Kelby Tomlinson was the first-ever Big 12 Newcomer of the Week as he grabbed the honor in the first week of the season in 2011 during the first season of recognizing the league's top newcomer each week.
