LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior Taylor Symmank was named Friday as a candidate for the Ray Guy Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top collegiate punter.
Symmank, a native of McKinney, Texas, is averaging 43.6 yards per punt this season which ranks second currently in the Big 12 and among the top 35 marks in the country. He has had 11 of his 35 punts this year downed inside the 20 yard line and 12 others that were fair caught.
Symmank was one of 80 candidates announced for the award that will be presented during the The Home Depot College Football Awards Show that will air Dec. 11 at 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.
The list of candidate will be trimmed to 10 semifinalists on Nov. 14 and then narrowed to just three finalists who will all attend the College Football Awards Show. The three finalists will be announced on Nov. 24.
This is the second-straight season where a Texas Tech punter has been named to the watch list as Ryan Erxleben was a candidate for the Ray Guy Award in 2013.
