Proudfoot, Moreno & Newcomers Turn Down MLB

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech shortstop Tim Proudfoot (North Bend, Wash.) and right-handed pitcher Dominic Moreno (Farmington, N.M.) will return for their senior seasons after passing on opportunities to sign with Major League Baseball organizations with today's 4 p.m. CT signing deadline for the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
Proudfoot was a 21st round draft selection (No. 642 overall) by the Oakland Athletics while Moreno went in the 33rd round (No. 1,005) to the St. Louis Cardinals. It marks the first time in school history that a pair of Red Raiders will return to campus after being drafted.
Proudfoot is a three-year starter for the Red Raiders at shortstop while having his best season as a junior in 2014 batting .309 (46-for-149) with five doubles, 19 RBI and committing just two errors (.990 fielding percentage) in 210 chances.
Proudfoot has played in 151 career games at Tech (148 starts) with 24 doubles, eight triples, five home runs and 82 RBI with a career .967 fielding percentage.
Moreno has spent time the past two seasons as the team's Friday-night starter while making the move to the bullpen late in the 2014 season during Tech's historic season ending with its first-ever appearance at the College World Series.
Moreno went 4-5 as a junior with 22 outings (8 starts), 3.14 ERA and two saves with 66.0 innings and 56 strikeouts and 24 walks allowed.
During his two seasons at Tech, Moreno is 7-9 with a 3.48 ERA in 34 appearances (18 starts) with three saves, 126.2 innings, 110 strikeouts and 47 walks allowed.
Carpenter also shined at the plate during his sophomore season with a .390 (60-for-154) batting average with 44 runs, 12 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs and 58 RBI.
Sanchez batted .324 (45-for-139) with seven doubles, two triples and three home runs with 41 RBI during this past season. He was 10-of-14 in stolen base attempts and was considered by many one of the top defensive catchers in the NCAA Region V.
Mahomes hit nearly .500 during his senior season while going 5-2 on the mound with a 1.78 ERA. He was named the Associated Press Texas High School Football Player of the Year as a senior while leading Whitehouse High School to a 12-1 record at quarterback with 4,619 passing yards and 50 touchdown passes while rushing for 920 yards and 15 touchdowns.

"After a lot of thought on the decision to sign (with Oakland) or return for my senior season, my family and I feel that it is in my best interest to return to Texas Tech to finish out my senior year. I am really looking forward to my final season as a Red Raider and I can't wait to see all of the Red Raider fans."
If anyone was anticipating my decision on whether I am signing to the MLB or staying at Texas Tech. I'll be back at Tech for my senior year!
