LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior Janine Beckie concluded a successful week in China early Thursday morning as the Canadian National Team claimed the BaoAn Cup following a 2-1 victory over host China.
The victory helped Canada finish a perfect 3-0 in the tournament with 2-1 wins also over Mexico and Korea Republic. Canada was forced to overcome an early goal deficit in its two wins over Korea and China.
"It's been an absolutely amazing experience here in China," Beckie said following Thursday's match. "It was fantastic to win the championship but more than that it has been a dream to be in this environment and train and play with such a talented group of women. I have learned so much from these two weeks and I hope that the journey continues to bring success and growth for the team and myself."
Beckie, making just her third appearance with the Canadian National Team, helped start the comeback in the tournament opener Sunday against Korea as she recorded her first career international goal off an Allysha Chapman cross in the 51st minute.
Chapman's pass to the right side of the box found a wide-open Beckie, who easily slid an attempt into the back of the net for Canada's first of two goals in a five-minute stretch of the second half.
Beckie had previously scored a pair of goals last summer during Canada's time in the FIFA U-23 World Cup. It was her first career goal, though, for the full national team as she is looking to make the final roster for the upcoming FIFA World Cup that will be hosted in Canada this summer.
Beckie earned the start in the final match of the tournament against China. She totaled 100 minutes during the three-match tournament that spanned just a total of five days.
Canada will meet China again in the World Cup opener scheduled for June 6 in Edmonton, Alberta.
