ANN ARBOR, Texas - No. 31 Texas Tech began the 2015 season in grand fashion, as the Lady Raiders swept No. 39 South Florida in seven singles matches on the first day of the Michigan Invitational, a hidden dual event at the Varsity Tennis Center.
"You have got to be excited to come out of the game and win seven straight singles matches from a team that was in the NCAA Tournament last season," said Lady Raider head coach Todd Petty.
From positions one through seven, the Lady Raiders won every match in straight sets.
Senior Kenna Kilgo filled the top spot with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over USF's Olaya Garrido, while Katelyn Jackson won No. 6 with an identical 6-1, 6-0 score.
Samantha Czarniak Rego picked up Texas Tech's third win of the day with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Jessica Cortes, while No. 89 Sarah Dvorak rolled over Olga Martinez, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2.
Sabrina Federici and Hortense Boscher followed suit with wins at No. 4 and No. 7, respectively. Lady Raider newcomer and mid-season enrollee Gabriella Talaba, added a 6-2, 6-3 victory to notch her first collegiate win and close out play.
Texas Tech did not have the same success in doubles, as the Lady Raiders won just one of three positions. Tech's lone win came at No. 3, where Czarniak Rego and Jackson dropped Natalie Looney and Alex Martin, 6-2.
Texas Tech's doubles were out of sync, as the Lady Raiders await the return of Lynn Kiro, who will return to the lineup on Sunday.
Texas Tech will start the day with doubles at noon CT on Sunday against South Florida, before following with singles against host Michigan. The Lady Raiders close out play on Monday, as Texas Tech will face South Carolina at 9 a.m. CT in singles before closing out play with doubles against Michigan.
