LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech women's basketball head coach Candi Whitaker announced on Wednesday the signings of high school seniors Brittany Brewer and Grayson Bright, both of which are slated to join the Lady Raiders for the 2016-17 season. Both athletes are ranked among the top-75 in their position group nationally by ESPNU HoopGurlz, with Brewer being the No. 97 player overall in the nation to go along with being the nation's No. 14 post player.
"We're really excited to have both Brittany and Grayson," Whitaker said. "They are both extremely talented. Not only that, they are also both fantastic people and great students. They really excel in the classroom, which is always so important."
This is the second-straight year in which Whitaker has brought in at least one signee ranked in the nation's top 100, after Japreece Dean signed in 2014.
"Brittany is an outstanding young lady," Whitaker said. "She is exactly what we look for in a Lady Raider. She brings a high-level skill set, defensive presence and athleticism to our team. Her game and strengths translate well to the collegiate level. We could not be happier to have the opportunity to coach Brittany for the next four years."
Brewer and Bright will join the Lady Raiders for the 2016-17 season along with three high-profile transfers who were signed earlier this year and are on campus, in McDonald's All-American Recee' Caldwell, who came to Lubbock from UCLA, Jada Terry, an imposing post player who transferred in from Texas A&M and Larryn Brooks, who was an All-Big 10 performer while becoming the first Indiana freshman to score 500 points in a season.
"Grayson brings size, athleticism and skill to the wing position," Whitaker said. "The energy and passion she plays with make her special. She takes great pride in playing defense and helping her team win. We are ecstatic that she decided to join the Lady Raider family. You add her and Brittany to Recee' [Caldwell], Jada [Terry] and Larryn [Brooks] who become eligible next year and you have five newcomers who create an instant impact."
The Lady Raiders will begin the 2015-16 regular season this Friday, Nov. 13, against Niagara at 11 a.m. at the United Supermarkets Arena. It will be Texas Tech's annual Education Day celebration. "She's felt comfortable with them. Just talking to her she's felt comfortable with them the whole time. I know Coach Whitaker. I've known her a long time. I know assistant coach Matt Corkery.
