Texas Tech earns its first tournament win of the season behind a dominating performance in San Antonio, Texas.
LUBBOCK, Texas - The 12th-ranked Texas Tech Men's Golf team captured its first tournament title of the 2015 season on Tuesday afternoon at the Lone Star Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
The Red Raiders took command of the field early in the first round of play and never looked back en route to the 11-stroke victory.
Sophomore Hannes Ronneblad earned his first collegiate individual title as the Swedish native outlasted UTSA's Zander Lozano in a sudden-death playoff. Ronneblad climbed atop the leaderboard following a dominating 7-under-par 65 in Monday's second round before sinking three birdies on the backside of the course Tuesday to force a playoff with Lozano for the win.
"It's always exciting to get a win and to throw in an individual title on top of that is just a bonus," said head coach Greg Sands. "I am proud of how we played Monday which put us in a position to get a win today and that's what we did. This team is just now realizing its potential and we have some serious momentum moving forward."
Senior Clement Sordet notched his sixth top 10 finish in the last nine competitions coming in fifth place overall with a 7-under scorecard for the three-round event.
Freshman Guillermo Pereira finished in a tie with Sordet for fifth place, marking his third top five finish of the 2015 season.
Southeastern Louisiana took second place while UT-El Paso came in third at 14-under for the tournament.
Texas Tech will now prepare to travel to College Station on April 4th for the Aggie Invitational.
