LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior second baseman Bryant Burleson (Midland, Texas) is one of 30 collegiate baseball players that have been named a candidate for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award, the organization announced.
Burleson becomes the second Red Raider in the history of the award (since 2007) to be named a candidate for the honor joining right-handed pitcher Brian Cloud (2009) - who was a finalist for the award.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Burleson currently ranks eighth all-time at Tech in three career statistical categories, including games played (186), at-bats (647) and doubles (46). He has been named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll on five occasions and is a back-to-back Academic All-Big 12 first team selection.
Burleson's long list of achievements during his Red Raider career includes earning All-Big 12 honorable mention in 2014, leading the Big 12 in doubles as a junior, tying the school record for games played in a season (66 in 2014) and tying the school record for doubles in a game (3 in 2014) to name a few.
In addition, Burleson currently leads all active Big 12 players in career doubles (46).
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS award winner will be announced during the 2015 College World Series in June.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
