Red Raiders Wrap Up Day One At Texas Relays

JW Smith qualified for the men's 400m hurdles final on Thursday at the Texas Relays.
AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Tech's JW Smith qualified for the men's 400 meter hurdles final to lead the No. 10 Texas Tech men's track & field team on day one of the Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, on Thursday, in Austin, Texas.
Smith's time of 51.49 was his fastest mark of the season, and a half a second faster than his run at the UTSA Challenge a week ago. Smith's time was the eighth-fastest of the prelims, earning him a spot in the final, to be held Friday night, at 7:05 p.m.
In the men's hammer throw, Kole Weldon placed 20th, with a mark of 53.55m/175-8, and in the men's pole vault, Kyle Padalecki cleared 4.90m/16-0.75, good enough for 11th place in pit two.
Natalie Thompson was the lone competitor on the day for the No. 13 Lady Raiders. She threw the javelin 41.34m/135-7 to place 11th in the B section of the event.
The Red Raiders will resume competition in Austin tomorrow, with both field and running events getting started at 9:30 a.m. The Longhorn Network will broadcast events from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and Watch ESPN will have a live feed from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.
