LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior men's golfer Clement Sordet will represent Europe in this year's Palmer Cup, being held June 12-14 at Rich Harvest Farms outside Sugar Grove, Ill.
Sordet, one of 24 candidates for this year's Ben Hogan award, is currently ranked 18th in the country, according to Golfweek player rankings. He leads the Red Raiders in stroke average at 70.3 and has recorded seven top 10 finishes in the last 10 tournaments, including the individual title at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.
The France native marks the third Texas Tech player to play in the Palmer Cup as Sordet joins brothers Nils and Oscar Floren to represent Europe in the Ryder Cup-style competition.
"This is a great honor for Clement and for our golf program here at Texas Tech," said Texas Tech head coach Greg Sands. "Clement is a fantastic golfer and he has been a key to our success."
Team USA will consist of Anders Albertson of Georgia Tech, Beau Hossler of Texas, Baylor's Kyle Jones, Jack Maguire of Florida State, Lee McCoy of Georgia, Stanford's Maverick McNealy, Robby Shelton of Alabama, Vanderbilt's Hunter Stewart, Ollie Schniederjans of Georgia Tech and CSU Monterey Bay's Carr Vernon. The United States team will be lead by head coach Bruce Heppler of Georgia Tech and assistant coach Chris Hill of Pacific.
Representing Europe will be Sordet, Pep Angles of Central Arkansas, Florida State's Rowin Caron, Thomas Detry of Illinois, Stirling's Mathias Eggenberger, Gary Hurley of Maynooth, ETSU's Adrian Meronk, Arizona State's Jon Rahm and Max Rottluff and Matthias Schwabb of Vanderbilt. Rahm, Detry and Angles were members of last year's victorious European squad while Hurley was a member of the 2013 team at Wilmington Country Club. Meronk is the first Palmer Cup player from Poland while Schwab and Eggenberger are the first from Austria and Liechtenstein, respectively. Counting its coaching staff, Europe is represented by a Palmer Cup record 10 countries. Jean Van de Velde of France will serve as head coach of the European team and Janice Moodie of Scotland will serve as his assistant.
