LUBBOCK, Texas -- Sarah Dvorak, a native Kurtistown, Hawai'i, became the first freshman in school history to be named Big 12 women's tennis player of the week, sharing the honor with Smith Hinton of Kansas, announced league officials on Tuesday.
Dvorak is the sixth student-athlete to earn the honor, but it is the seventh overall award for the Lady Raiders. Former Lady Raider Samantha Adams won the award twice. Teammate Kenna Kilgo won the award last week.
The freshman led Texas Tech to its first win over a Top 10 program in school history, as the Lady Raiders defeated No. 7 Baylor, 4-3, on Saturday. As the team score stood 3-3, the match was decided when No. 90 Dvorak upset No. 75 Kiah Generette, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.
Dvorak has now won the clinching match three matches in a row -- No. 31 Oklahoma, No. 11 Oklahoma and No. 7 Baylor.
Dvorak improved to a team-best 21-9 on the season in singles, including 11-3 in dual matches. She is 3-1 in Big 12 play at No. 3 singles.
In doubles, Dvorak teamed with fellow freshman Katelyn Jackson to help secure the doubles point against the Bears, as Texas Tech's tandem topped Blair Shankle and Kiah Generette, 6-3, at No. 3. Dvorak and Jackson are 8-4 as a tandem, while Dvorak is 14-13 overall in doubles this season.
Texas Tech will continue its homestand, as the Lady Raiders host West Virginia at 2 p.m. on Friday and Iowa State at noon on Sunday at the McLeod Tennis Center.
