LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech freshman Sarah Dvorak, a native of Kurtistown, Hawai'i, earned her second honor of the year, as the Lady Raider was honored as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Texas Region Rookie of the Year.
Dvorak, who was the highest-rated recruit when she arrived in Lubbock, recorded the third-most wins by a freshman in the modern era at Texas Tech with a 26-10 record this season. She has recorded a 16-4 dual match record, going 6-2 and No. 2 and 10-2 at No. 3. She went 5-4 against nationally-ranked opponents and 11-5 against regionally-ranked opponents. Dvorak was ranked as high as No. 56 in singles this season.
One of three Lady Raiders named first team All-Big 12 with Kenna Kilgo and Gabriela Talaba, Dvorak is the second Lady Raider in program history to be named Texas Region Rookie of the Year. Samantha Adams won the award in 2011.
Dvorak recorded three straight clinching wins against No. 31 Oklahoma, No. 11 Oklahoma State and No. 7 Baylor. The win over Baylor was the biggest ranked win in program history.
During the first two rounds of the NCAA Championships, Dvorak went 1-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles to lead Texas Tech to its first-ever Round of 15 appearance.
In the fall, Dvorak advanced to the USTA/ITA consolation finals and was awarded named the most outstanding singles player at the Ole Miss Invitational.
In doubles, Dvorak is 18-15 overall and 14-8 in dual matches this spring, including 12-5 with Katelyn Jackson at No. 3.
Dvorak and the Lady Raiders are headed to Waco to face No. 1 USC in the Round of 16 of the NCAA Championships on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center.
