LUBBOCK, Texas - Former Texas Tech pitcher Chad Bettis carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning Friday night, one of a several strong performances by former Red Raider pitchers in the major leagues so far this weekend.
Bettis, a Lubbock native who starred at Texas Tech from 2008-10, took a perfect game into the seventh before a fielding error from shortstop Troy Tulowizki. His no-hit bid was broken up an inning later off a one-out single from Phillies left fielder Cody Asche.
Bettis, who was a second round selection by Colorado in the 2010 MLB Draft, was looking to become just the second Rockies pitcher in franchise history to toss a no-hitter, joining former ace Ubaldo Jimenez.

It was the second-straight strong outing by Bettis as he previosly took a shutout into the ninth inning this past Sunday in a victory over the San Francisco Giants. The Rockies are 4-0 in games Bettis has started this year after he was called up from Triple-A on May 14.
Bettis wasn't the only former Red Raider finding success in the majors Friday night, though, as Nathan Karns surrendered just one hit over six shutout innings for Tampa Bay while Miami reliever AJ Ramos picked up his third save of the season.
Karns, who pitched for the Red Raiders from 2008-09, struck out seven before being pulled to start the seventh inning in a no-decision. He is now 3-2 this season with a 3.32 ERA over 10 starts for the Rays.

Ramos, meanwhile, allowed a run off two hits while collecting his second save this week in Miami's 4-3 victory over the New York Mets. It was only the third time in Ramos' 23 appearances this year where he has surrendered an earned run.
The Lubbock native remains one of the top relievers in the majors this season as he sports an impressive 1.13 ERA over 24 complete innings. Ramos pitched four seasons at Tech from 2006-09.
The trio of former Red Raider pitching greats is among the 28 Tech baseball standouts that have played in Major League Baseball.
