LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech sprinter Montene Speight has been named a Capital One First Team Academic All-American, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Speight is just the second Red Raider track & field athlete to earn first team Academic All-American honors, joining Patience Knight, who was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America first team in 2009.
Speight earned this recognition after being selected to the District 7 All-Academic Team, and from there she was one of 15 Division I athletes to be placed on the national first team.
This is the fourth major academic honor Speight has received in the last month. She was named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team, was recognized as the Big 12 Spring Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and became the first Texas Tech track & field athlete to win the prestigious NCAA Elite 89 Award.
Speight, who took 16th place in the 400 meter dash at the NCAA Outdoor Championships to earn recognition as a second team All-American, has carried a cumulative 4.0 GPA during her time at Tech, while majoring in political science.
