LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Sports Hall of Fame announced Wednesday that former Texas Tech All-American defensive back Tracy Saul will be one of nine new members to the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame.
Saul, a local product out of Idalou, will be joined by Norm DeBriyn (Arkansas), Thomas Everett (Baylor, Billy Ray Brown (Houston), Ricky Pierce (Rice), Kyle (O'Brien) Stevens (SMU), Carlette (Guidry) White (Texas), Anjanette Kirkland (Texas A&M) and Darrell Browder (TCU) in the 2015 induction class.
Tracy Saul, one of the top defensive backs in school history, will enter the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame this fall.
In the 81-year history of the Southwest Conference, Saul was one of only four players to garner All-SWC honors over four-consecutive seasons. He also earned second team All-America honors following his 1991 junior season.
Saul began his career with eight interceptions as a freshman, the most for a Red Raider since John Thompson also picked off eight passes in 1951. He is the only player in school history to record at least eight interceptions in two different seasons as he repeated his performance as a freshman during his 1991 junior campaign.
Saul ended his career as the Texas Tech all-time leader with 25 interceptions, a record that remains untouched entering the 2015 season. Saul also ranks tied for fourth in NCAA Division-I history as well as no player nationally has recorded at least 25 interceptions in a career since Saul completed his eligibility in 1992.
In addition to his prowess defensively, Saul was also among the top punt returners in school history as he averaged just over 10 yards a return. He totaled 902 punt return yards during his career, fourth-most in program history behind the likes of Wes Welker, Tyrone Thurman and Danny Amendola.
Sponsored by the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame induction ceremony and luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 5 at the Doubletree by Hilton in downtown Dallas.
