In the final scrimmage of the preseason, the Red Raider offense featured a balanced attack on the ground and through the air while the defense was disruptive as well with several sacks and a few key third-down stands.
"Today felt good to finish out camp on a positive note," senior running back DeAndre Washington said. "I have to commend our defense. They had some great stops early on before the offense finished strong. It was a good ending to a great camp."
The scrimmage marked the final time the Red Raiders will face each other on the Jones AT&T Stadium turf prior to opening the 2015 season on Sept. 5 against Sam Houston State.
With exactly two weeks remaining prior to that season opener, senior defensive lineman Branden Jackson said he liked the way the defense played on Saturday as the unit was sound in new defensive coordinator David Gibbs' scheme.
"The defense came out and competed really well against a really good offense," Jackson said. "We stayed together and stayed tough and made plays when we could. There are a lot of things we left out there on the field. We have to learn to capitalize on those whenever we get the opportunity, especially against a good offense like ours."
On the other side of the ball, offensive coordinator Eric Morris was equally excited about the way his unit performed as both of Texas Tech's quarterbacks -- Davis Webb and Patrick Mahomes II -- tossed several perfectly-placed balls while Washington and the running game were effective on the ground.
"I think collectively as a group it's as good as we've played since we've been here," Morris said. "We've have guys playing fast at every single position. We've just got to keep going and get in game shape the next two weeks. They're excited to play against somebody else."
For senior linebacker Micah Awe, Texas Tech's season opener can't get here soon enough. Like Morris, he is also ready to face an opponent that doesn't consist of teammates on the opposite of the field.
Until then, Awe and the Red Raiders will continue their preseason preparations for Sam Houston State.
"We're going to try to be as prepared as we can be," Awe said. "Until the first game, I can talk all I want and say we are going to win but it doesn't matter until you do it."
