Johnson Named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week

Texas Tech freshman Jah'Shawn Johnson was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday following his career-high 16 tackles last weekend in a victory over Arkansas.

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech redshirt freshman defensive back Jah'Shawn Johnson was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday following his 16 tackles and forced fumble last weekend in a 35-24 victory at Arkansas.
Johnson, a native of Ennis, Texas, is the first Red Raider to be named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week since Cornelius Douglas received the award on Oct. 1, 2012. It is the first weekly award of Johnson's career.
This is the third-consecutive week where Texas Tech has earned a weekly award as Patrick Mahomes II was named the conference's top offensive player following the first two games while Jakeem Grant was named the special teams standout after the Red Raiders defeated Sam Houston State in the season opener.
Texas Tech had not previously garnered a weekly award in three-straight weeks since Graham Harrell was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week from Oct. 27-Nov. 10, 2008. Matt Williams was also named the Special Teams Player of the Week on Oct. 27 of that year as well.
Johnson led Texas Tech defensively with his career-high 16 tackles, the most for a Red Raider since Keenon Ward also recorded 16 against West Virginia a year ago. His 16 tackles also marked the most in the Big 12 so far this season.
In addition, Johnson sealed Texas Tech's victory over the Razorbacks with a late forced fumble that he went on to recover. He leads the Big 12 with two fumble recoveries this season and is tied for the conference high with a pair of forced fumbles.
Johnson and the Red Raiders will look to continue their 3-0 start on Saturday afternoon when Texas Tech hosts No. 3 TCU inside Jones AT&T Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 3:45 p.m. CT with television coverage provided nationally by FOX Sports.
