Lubbock, Texas. -- The Texas Tech softball team hosted their first practice of 2016 Thursday as the team hosted a full team practice at Rocky Johnson Field.
"I think it is so exciting," said head coach Adrian Gregory. "Our kids want to be back around each other and have that comraderie and to see that all the work they did over the break and through the fall has paid off. I think a seven week break is really long and our kids are so excited to be back out there."
The Red Raiders will be tested early in what has set up to be a daunting 2016 season. Tech will begin the 2016 softball season on the road at the 2016 Sportco Kick Off Classic in Las Vegas for a six game weekend featuring host team UNLV, Utah Valley, Long Beach State and Minnesota February 11-13. From there, the Red Raiders will travel to San Diego to face San Diego, San Diego State, SEC power Kentucky, Pac-12 contender California and South Dakota Februrary 19-21.
As if that stretch wasn't challenging enough, the Red Raiders will then make a trip to Lafayette, LA to face Louisiana Lafayette in a double header on February 25 before competing in the LSU Invitational February 27 and 28th.
"Our Strength of Schedule is high," added Gregory. "We play a lot of tough opponents, but I believe that if you are going to be the best you have to play the best. I am excited to see what our mindset will be in that and see how we attack each opponent."
The Red Raiders will play their first games at Rocky Johnson Field at the Texas Tech Invitational slated for March 4-6. Following the weekend home stand, the Red Raiders will take another road trip to face Texas A&M in College Station, Texas March 11-13.
Tech will follow that weekend up with another home tournament March 17-20 before hitting the road again for another three game stand against Arizona State March 24-30.
Tech will enter Big 12 Conference play on April 1st when the team will host Oklahoma State. Tech will host Big 12 foes Iowa State April 22-24 before wrapping up the home schedule with Baylor the weekend of April 29.
