Artac Snags Saguaro Amateur Title

Wes Artac won the Saguaro Amateur title on Wednesday.

Ariz.-- Texas Tech Sophomore Wes Artac became the second Tech golfer in as many weeks to claim an individual title, winning the 2016 Saguaro Amateur, at Southern Dunes Golf Club, in Orlando, Fla., on Wednesday. Artac was the only player in the tournament to shoot multiple rounds in the 60's, carding back-to-back 68's on Monday and Tuesday on the par-72 course, before firing a 71 on Wednesday to win the tournament by one stroke, at nine-under-par.
"I'm very happy for Wes and his win in Phoenix," Texas Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "He would be the first to tell you he wasn't playing to his standards this fall, so it was great to see him back in form. I know he has worked very hard for this."
Artac's -9 performance is even more impressive considering he was one of just 11 golfers to finish the tournament under-par out of a field of 109 players.
Artac is the second Tech golfer in as many weeks to win an amateur title, joining Hannes Ronneblad, who won the Dixie Amateur, on Dec. 22. In addition, junior Federico Zucchetti turned in a sixth-place performance at the Patriot All-American last week, turning this into a very solid winter for the Tech golfers.
"This offseason has been really exciting, seeing the guys improve and challenge themselves like this," Sands said. "We have had two victories and another strong finish. It's great to have the guys be so dedicated to their improvement. This will give us great momentum heading into the spring season."
Tech's season will begin with the Amer Ari Invitational, which will take place Feb. 4-6, in Kona, Hawaii.
