Jonathan Giles leads the Big 12 in receiving yards and touchdowns entering this weekend
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech sophomore wide receiver Jonathan Giles was one of seven players added to the Biletnikoff Award watch list on Tuesday morning following his impressive start to the 2016 campaign.
Â
Giles, who leads the Red Raiders in every receiving category so far this season, was named to a watch list for the first time in his career. His selection marks the 11th time in the past 12 seasons where a Red Raider has been a nominee for the Biletnikoff Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top receiver.
Â
Giles has been instrumental for a Tech attack that leads the country in passing offense (544.0 yards per game) and ranks second in both scoring offense (55.2 points per game) and total offense (649.8 yards per game).
Â
The Missouri City, Texas native has caught 35 passes through five games, totaling 614 yards and seven touchdowns, all team highs. His 614 receiving yards are the most for a Red Raider through five games since two-time Biletnikoff Award winner Michael Crabtree in 2007.
Â
Giles' season total was boosted by a pair of big performances against both Louisiana Tech and Kansas. He totaled what was a career-high 189 yards through the air against the Bulldogs before following just over a week later with 219 yards on 12 catches in Tech's Big 12 opener against Kansas.
Â
His 219 yards versus the Jayhawks marked the most for a Tech receiver in a Big 12 contest since Crabtree and fellow NFL wideout Danny Amendola posted 237 and 233 yards, respectively, against Oklahoma State in 2007.
Â
Giles enters this weekend's West Virginia game ranked sixth nationally in receiving touchdowns, seventh in receiving yards per game (122.8) and ninth in receptions per game (7.0). He leads the Big 12 in all three of those categories as well.
Â
The Tallahassee Quarterbacks Club Foundation will announce 10 semifinalists for the award on Nov. 14 following a vote by members of the Biletnikoff Award National Selection Committee. Three finalists will be declared following another vote on Nov. 22.
Â
The 2016 Biletnikoff Award will be announced Dec. 8 during The Home Depot College Football Awards Show that will air from 6-8 p.m. CT on ESPN. Former Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard will present the trophy during the show.
Â
Kickoff against the Mountaineers is slated for 11 a.m. Saturday morning inside Jones AT&T Stadium. Tickets are still on sale and can be purchased online or by contacting the Texas Tech Ticket Office at 806-742-TECH.
