The junior quarterback is Tech's first Maxwell semifinalist since 2008
PHILADELPHIA – Texas Tech junior quarterback Patrick Mahomes II has been named one of 18 semifinalists for the Maxwell Award, which is awarded annually to college football's most outstanding player.
Â
Mahomes is the first Red Raider to be named a Maxwell semifinalist since Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree both made the list in 2008 with Harrell eventually becoming a finalist.
Â
Mahomes has been arguably the most prolific quarterback in college football in 2016 as he currently leads the FBS in passing yards (3,519) and total offense (3,770 yards). He is also tied for the FBS lead in total touchdowns (38).
Â
Mahomes leads a Texas Tech offense that tops the FBS in passing yards per game (500.6) and ranks second in total offense (600.3 yards per game) as well as scoring offense (47.4 points per game). Under Mahomes' guidance, the Red Raiders also lead the FBS in third down conversion percentage (.578).
Â
The Whitehouse, Texas native also leads the FBS in passing plays of 10-plus yards, 20-plus yards and 30-plus yards, while being tied for third nationally with 28 passing touchdowns.
Â
On the ground, Mahomes is responsible for 10 touchdowns, which is tied for the overall Big 12 lead and also ranks 18th in the FBS and second among quarterbacks.
Â
Earlier this season, Mahomes set a single-game FBS record for total offense with 819 yards against Oklahoma. He tied the single-game FBS passing record with 734 yards, while also rushing for a career-high 85 yards. He scored seven total touchdowns in the game, one of his five performances this season with at least five total touchdowns.
Â
The semifinalists were selected by the Maxwell Football Club National Selection Committee. This year the Maxwell Football Club has partnered with Pro Football Focus (PFF) as a selection committee partner. PFF has provided detailed statistical and performance based assessments to selection committee staff, and several senior PFF analysts have been added to our committee and have participated in the selection process.
Â
Semifinalist voting for both of the collegiate awards presented by the Maxwell Football Club will begin on Tuesday, Nov. 1Â and will close on Nov. 21. Three finalists for each award will be announced on Nov. 22 and a second round of voting will take place at that time. Eligible voters include Maxwell Football Club members, NCAA head football coaches, sports information directors and selected national media.
Â
Mahomes and the Red Raiders return to Jones AT&T Stadium on Saturday to face Texas. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. with national television coverage provided on FS1. Fans can hear the contest on the more than 40 radio affiliates of the Texas Tech Sports Network. The game has been declared a sellout.
