Hinkle, Murphy To Battle For NWSL Championship

Texas Tech soccer will have two former standouts in the 2016 NWSL Championship match Sunday.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Former Texas Tech soccer teammates Jaelene Hinkle and Alli Murphy will be on opposite sides of the field as their two teams will face each other in the 2016 National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Championship on Sunday, Oct. 9, at 4 p.m. CST in Houston on FOX Sports 1.
Hinkle is in her second season with the Western New York Flash, after being drafted at No. 7 overall in the 2015 NWSL College Draft. 2016 was the first season for Murphy in the NWSL, who was drafted with the 20th overall pick by the Washington Spirit in this year's draft.
Hinkle has played in 15 matches for the Flash this season at defender, recording one goal and three assists. Her lone goal came on May 7 against Sky Blue FC after converting a penalty kick in the 72nd minute to tie the match at one. The Spirit put together a 9-6-5 this season to earn the fourth seed in the NWSL playoffs, before taking down Portland Thorns FC, 4-3, in the semifinals.
Murphy has served as a reserve midfielder for the Spirit this season, as Washington entered the playoffs as the No. 2 seed with a 12-5-3 record. In their semifinal contest, the Spirit defeated the Chicago Red Stars, 2-1, to set up a date for the championship.
First touch from BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston between the Flash and the Spirit is set for 4 p.m. CST, as Hinkle & Murphy have the opportunity to become the first Red Raider to win the NWSL title.
