Texas Tech Drops Battle With Baylor, 1-0

The Red Raiders fell to the Bears on Sunday afternoon in Lubbock.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech soccer team suffered a tough defeat to Baylor, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
Â
The lone goal in the contest came in the 55th minute, as Baylor (10-4-1, 3-1-0) midfielder Julie James found the back of the net from the top of the box for the score. The final dropped Tech to 8-4-2, 1-3-0 this season with the loss.
Â
"I thought we were relatively better than we were Friday in terms of our mentality," head coach Tom Stone said. "We took away all the things that Baylor likes to do to be dangerous and unfortunately for us, their best player had their only chance of the game. What is tough for a young team and a coaching staff, old or young, is when you give up one good chance and that chance goes in. It was their best player, so give it up to her. She made us pay.
Â
"As a team, it's a hard lesson to learn because we were in it and we created a boatload of crazy chaos at the end of the game. Tatum Barton's ball was going in and it hits the inside part of the post. Balls were on the goal line, there was traffic; we just couldn't put one in. It was hard to be too rough on the team today because they battled well on a Sunday against a more veteran team, but it was a tough pill to swallow."
Â
It was a relatively quiet first half, as Baylor put up five shots, compared to Tech's two. Despite the little offense, it was a physical frame, as 15 total fouls occurred, with the Bears committing eight to the Red Raiders' seven.
Â
Four of Baylor's seven second-half shots came within the first nine minutes, as it was capped by the Bears' goal in the 55th minute. With the ball at the right-corner of the box, forward Amanda Hoglund made a move to bring it toward the middle before passing to midfielder Julie James, who pitched a shot to the left-side of the net for the tally.
Â
The Red Raiders kept up the pressure after the strike, recording five of the next six shots, which also included four corner kick opportunities earned by Tech. That 13-minute stretch produced four of eight corners the Red Raiders amassed in the in frame, giving them nine overall in the match.
Â
After a pair of Baylor corners, Tech returned to the attack, which featured two more shots on goal, six overall, including a shot from freshman forward Tatum Barton that dinged off the post in the 76th minute. Despite their efforts, the Red Raiders' 14 shots were not enough to help Tech break through to equalize the match.
Â
"I think both Baylor and Oklahoma State defended very well," Stone said about Tech's weekend opponents. "They deserve credit for that. Our inability to turn these chances into goals hurt us. That hasn't been a problem for us the last five years, or even this season. We've had a pretty good strike-to-goal ratio. But we've got some kids that are hitting the wall a little bit, we have some players pushing through it, and as a group, we just haven't been as dangerous."
Â
Tech will have only one match next week, as they will get to put all of their focus on No. 3 West Virginia (12-1-1, 4-0-0), as the Red Raiders travel to Morgantown to face the Mountaineers on Friday, Oct. 14, at 5 p.m. on ESPNU.
Â
"I think we need to get on the road because clearly this was weekend was rough for us," Stone said. "They're a tough, resilient group. I know they're upset about it and they love the road. We have a great time as a team on the road and we don't mind away fans."
