November 22, 2016 | Women's Soccer
Lauren Watson receives second team Academic All-America status from CoSIDA.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech soccer senior goalkeeper Lauren Watson has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Second Team, it was announced today.
Â
It is the third academic honor for The Woodlands, Texas, native this season, as she was recognized earlier in the year with the Academic All-District nod from CoSIDA and her third-straight Academic All-Big 12 accolade.
Â
Watson is one of 13 student-athletes sporting a 4.00 GPA on this year's squads, including five on the second team. All three keepers across the three teams had perfect grade point averages. In order to be nominated for the All-America honor, she had to be selected to one of the All-District teams, which are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.
Â
To receive that distinction, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA at her current institution, must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position and is only eligible until she has completed one full calendar year at her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
Â
Watson found success both on and off the field in 2016. Playing in every minute of every match this season, Watson recorded 86 saves behind a goals against average mark of 1.06, which ranks seventh in a single season at Texas Tech. She also moved up the career leaderboards at Tech in saves (254) to fourth and shutouts (25.5) to second, after putting up six clean sheets in her final season in the scarlet & black.
