Mahomes, Nelson Garner COSIDA Academic All-District Honors
November 03, 2016 | Football
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior quarterback Patrick Mahomes II and senior defensive back Justis Nelson were both recognized for their work in the classroom Thursday as they received Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
This is the first career CoSIDA academic honor for both Mahomes and Nelson, who are the first Red Raider duo to earn All-District recognition in the same season since Cody Davis and Alex Torres in 2009.
In addition to being the nation's leading passer this season, Mahomes also sports a high grade-point average as a marketing major. Nelson, a fellow captain who is fourth on the team in tackles, is currently in Texas Tech's graduate school after earning his degree in sociology last spring.
Mahomes and Nelson will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballots where first, second and third team selections take place. The Academic all-America teams will be selected by vote of the Academic All-America committee and CoSIDA Board of Directors. The three teams will be announced later this month.
In order to be considered for Academic All-District, a student-athlete must be a starter or an important reserve, have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA, have played in at least half of the team's games at the position listed for their nomination and have completed one full calendar year at his current institution.
The Red Raiders return to Jones AT&T Stadium for the final time Saturday morning to host in-state rival Texas. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. on FOX Sports 1 as well as the Texas Tech Sports Network.
