LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech men's golf continues its 2016 spring slate this weekend at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, taking place at the Classic Club, in Palm Desert, Calif. The Red Raiders are coming off a season-opening ninth-place finish at the Amer Ari Invitational, two weeks ago. Although the Red Raiders had stretches of great golf, they struggled with consistency. Hurly Long (-4) finished tied for 20th as an individual, after his final-round 1-under 71. He was under-par in all three rounds. Hannes Ronneblad (-3) tied for 28th, giving the Red Raiders two top-30 individual finishes. Federico Zucchetti fired a 71 as well to card an even-par 288 and finish in a tie for 42nd.
"I think there were a lot of positives [from Hawaii]," Texas Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "I talked to the guys about where we need to get better. We started well in every round, getting to at least 10-under at some point on each day, which was very encouraging. Unfortunately, we didn't finish those rounds. However, I felt the mistakes are easy to clean up if we work hard and pay attention."
Those three Red Raiders will join Henry Todd and Ivan Ramirez to round out the Tech starting five. As he did in Hawaii when he shot a first-round 68, Hayden Springer will take the course as an individual, separate from the team score.
"The course will be overseeded, so it will be really green," Sands said. "It will be a nice place to feel good about your game, and it usually isn't too windy. We also won't be going up against as loaded of a field as we did in Hawaii, so hopefully if we play well, we will enjoy a better finish.
Hosted by Wyoming, the 15-team field joining Tech this weekend is Nebraska, CSU-Northridge, UT Arlington, Kansas, Denver, TCU, Southern Utah, Cal Poly, Idaho, Old Dominion, Southern Illinois, Oral Roberts and South Dakota State.
Tee off is scheduled for Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. CT. For live stats and scoring, be sure to follow the event on golfstat.com.
