SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Texas Tech softball (3-3) fell to San Diego (3-3), 6-0, in the Red Raiders' first appearance in the Campbell/Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium, on Friday afternoon. The Red Raiders, coming off a 3-2 showing at the Sportco Kick Off Classic a week ago, were unable to mount any offense against a stingy San Diego defense and pitching staff that held the Red Raiders to just two hits in the contest.
The Toreros struck early, plating a pair of runs in the first inning. San Diego would double its lead in the third as Lauren Kane smacked a double into right center to put the Toreros up 3-0. Following a pitching change, USD struck again as Taylor Spence brought in Kane from second on a single through the middle.
San Diego would tack on an additional two runs in the top half of the fifth to give the Toreros the final 6-0 mark.
With the loss, the Red Raiders fell to 3-3 on the season and 0-1 against the Toreros all-time. The defeat marked the first time since April 3, 2015, that a Texas Tech team was shutout. The Red Raiders will return to the field for their second game of the Campbell/Cartier Classic later Friday afternoon as Tech will take on tournament host San Diego State at 9 p.m. CT.
