HOUSTON - Texas Tech sophomore infielder Michael Davis was named to the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic All-Tournament Team on Sunday evening in an announcement by the Houston Astros organization.
Davis, who started all three games at second base for the Red Raiders (6-2), hit .583 overall (7-for-12) for the tournament with two RBI, a double and a pair of stolen bases. His .583 average was the highest among all-tournament team honorees.
Davis helped lead the Red Raiders to a 2-1 showing in the prestigious event that annually features a competitive field of several of the top programs in collegiate baseball. Tech defeated a pair of top-10 nationally ranked teams during the weekend in No. 9 Houston and No. 6 Louisiana.
The Red Raiders began the College Classic with a 3-2 victory over the Cougars on Friday which was followed by a 5-3 extra-innings win over Louisiana on Saturday. Tech fell to No. 18 Arkansas, 10-6, earlier Sunday to wrap the event.
In addition, the Astros also announced the field for the 2017 Shriners College Classic which will feature Tech and fellow Big 12 Conference counterparts TCU and Baylor as well as three schools from the Southeastern Conference in Texas A&M, LSU and Ole Miss. The 2017 Shriners College Classic will be held March 3-5 at Minute Maid Park and will utilize a Big 12 versus SEC format.
Tech will be participating in the 2017 Shriners College Classic for the 10th time in program history as the Red Raiders are 9-18 all-time in the event. Tech had not previously made back-to-back trips to the College Classic in school history.
The Red Raiders return to Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park this week for five games at home, beginning Tuesday with the start of a midweek series against New Mexico State. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 6:30 p.m. while the Wednesday finale is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
