Series Preview: No. 9 California

The Red Raiders will face California for the first time in program history this weekend as Texas Tech begins a four-game series with the Golden Bears at 9 p.m. CT Friday night.

? Texas Tech begins its longest road trip of the season Friday when the 25th-ranked Red Raiders open a four-game series with No. 9 California at 9 p.m. CT Friday evening in Berkeley.
? The Red Raiders embarked on an eight-game, 11-day road trip Thursday as Texas Tech will also travel to the Dallas/Fort Worth area for a Tuesday night contest with UT Arlington at Globe Life Park. Tech closes the road trip next weekend with a three-game series at Baylor to open Big 12 Conference play.
? The Cal series concludes a 12-game stretch where Texas Tech will have played 10 games against nationally-ranked opponents. The Red Raiders are currently 3-3 this year against ranked teams with wins over then-No. 9 Houston, No. 6 Louisiana and No. 22 Cal State Fullerton.
? Cal marks the third top-10 ranked opponent to face the Red Raiders so far this season. Texas Tech is a perfect 2-0 in those games this season and 11-8 all-time under fourth-year head coach Tim Tadlock.
? This weekend's series will mark the first-ever meeting between Texas Tech and Cal on a baseball diamond.
? Texas Tech is traveling to face a Pac-12 opponent on the road for the first time since late in the 2013 season when the Red Raiders fell at No. 13 Arizona State, 8-5. Tech is 18-45 all-time against current members of the Pac-12 Conference.
? This is the second-straight season where Texas Tech has faced a nationally-ranked opponent in consecutive weekend series. The Red Raiders, who hosted No. 22 Cal State Fullerton at home last weekend, went on the road in back-to-back weeks last year to battle then-No. 30 Fullerton and No. 22 San Diego State.
? Texas Tech plans to start four freshmen on the mound during the Cal series, beginning with Erikson Lanning on Friday evening. Steven Gingery and Davis Martin are scheduled to start both games of a Saturday doubleheader before Ty Harpenau closes the series on Sunday.

? Texas Tech and Cal will be meeting for the first time ever on the baseball diamond this weekend.
? Texas Tech holds an 18-45 all-time record against current members of the Pac-12 Conference.
? The Red Raiders had not previously faced a Pac-12 opponent since splitting a pair of midweek games against Arizona State during the 2013 season.
? Texas Tech has previously faced a Pac-12 opponent in a weekend series since 2000 when the Red Raiders took two-of-three games from No. 15 Southern California in Lubbock.
? This will be the first time Texas Tech has gone on the road for a weekend series against a Pac-12 opponent since traveling to face No. 9 Southern California early in the 1999 season. The Trojans won two of three games in that series.
