Red Raider Duo Begins Heptathlon At Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Tech track & field kicked off the Texas Relays on Wednesday, March 30, with the first half of the women's heptathlon at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The only competition of the day for the Red Raiders were four of the seven events that make up the heptathlon, with senior Natalie Thompson and freshman Kaylee Hinton representing Texas Tech in the field of 30. After the first day, Hinton stands at 10th with 3194 points, while Thompson is in 23rd at 3015 points.
Hinton clocks in at 24.90 (+3.9), an all-conditions personal-best, to earn 896 points.

The two flourished in the high jump, both opening up at 1.60m/5-3 and clearing on their first attempts. Thompson would cruise over the next height at 1.63m/5-4.25 on her first jump at the bar, while Hinton successfully made it over on her third attempt. At 1.66m/5-5.25, the duo sailed over the bar, each on their second time at the height, to move on.
Both competitors would also clear 1.69m/5-6.5, Thompson on her second and Hinton on her third, which would be Hinton's last clearance of the afternoon, earning her 842 points. Thompson made quick work of the next bar set at 1.72m/5-7.75, jumping over successfully on her first attempt, which would give her second overall in the event. That mark gave her 879 points, for a two event score of 1765 points, putting her in ninth. Hinton's two event total put her in seventh at 1820 points.
In the shot put, Hinton tossed her best to a distance of 9.88m/32-5 for 478 points, while Thompson hit a mark of 9.72m/31-10.75 to earn 469 points. After three events, Hinton stood at 12th with 2298 points, with Thompson closely behind in 20th at 2234 points.
Hinton closed out the day with an all-conditions personal-best in the 200-meter dash behind a time of 24.90 (+3.9), for 896 points. Thompson recorded a time of 26.18 (+3.8) to pick up 781 points in the event.
Hinton & Thompson will complete the heptathlon on Thursday, March 31, with the long jump, javelin and 800 meters, starting 11 a.m., along with several other events throughout the day. A recap of today's competition will air on WatchESPN.com at 8:30 p.m. CDT on Wednesday night.
