LAS VEGAS, Nev -- Behind a pair of great individual late-round flurries, the Texas Tech men's golf team took sixth place on Wednesday at the Southern Highlands Collegiate, in Las Vegas, Nev.
Wes Artac and Ivan Ramirez each polished off top-10 individual finishes with great closes on the final nine holes. Going into the turn, Artac was one-under and Ramirez was even-par before they caught fire.

Ramirez carded birdies on holes 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6, on his way to a four-under 68, and Wes Artac birdied 1, 3, 6, 7 and 9, resulting in a five-under 67. Those scores, which were the low individual rounds on the day, brought the Red Raider pair into a tie for eighth overall, at two-over for the tournament.
Thanks in part to those performances, Tech rose from 11th to sixth on the leaderboard, where the Red Raiders eventually finished.
The Red Raiders, No. 39 in the Golfweek Men's Collegiate Team Rankings, passed up No. 10 Oklahoma State, No. 1 Illinois, No. 4 Alabama and No. 18 California in the process. This marks the second time this spring the Red Raiders have beaten the nation's top-ranked team.
"I thought a few guys really showed up and grew up on a very hard golf course," Texas Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "We beat some very good teams, including the No. 1 team in the country. A couple guys struggled, but Southern Highlands can do that sometimes. I know they will bounce back. We will take a lot of confidence moving forward from this weekend."
In total, the Red Raiders defeated eight teams that entered the weekend ranked above them.
Hannes Ronneblad picked up a top-40 individual finish after shooting a 2-over 74 today, placing him at 8-over for the tournament, tied for 38th place.
The Red Raiders will be back in action this weekend, March 12-13 at the Mission Inn Spectacular, which will be held in Howey In The Hills, Fla.
