LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Texas Tech football team will kick off its annual Midland Spring Practice at 1 p.m., this Saturday at Grande Communications Stadium. This is the first opportunity for fans to get a glimpse of the complete 2016 team live in action, and admission is free.
This marks the Red Raiders' fourth consecutive trip to Midland for a spring practice. Gates for the scrimmage open at noon, but fans are encouraged to arrive as early as 8 a.m. to tailgate in the Grande Communications Stadium parking lot.
The event will also feature a children's play area, photo opportunities with Texas Tech's mascot Raider Red and additional entertainment hosted by the Midland Convention and Visitor's Bureau.
Following a 1 p.m. live kickoff, the Red Raiders will partake in a four-series face-off between varying offensive and defensive groupings. There will then be a 5-10 minute special teams period preceding halftime.
Following halftime there will be a new arrangement of four series pitting the offensive and defensive squads against each other once more.
The Red Raiders are coming off a 2015 campaign featuring one of the nation's most high-powered offenses, a win in Austin for the first time since 1997 and a trip to the Houston Bowl. Junior Patrick Mahomes II became only the 13th quarterback in NCAA history to amass 5,000 yards of total offense in a single season.
