LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech women's tennis head coach Todd Petty has inked Alba Cortina-Pou to a National Letter of Intent and Athletic Scholarship Agreement announced Tuesday as part of the spring NCAA signing period.
"We're extremely excited to add Alba to the Lady Raider family," Petty said. "She is a very passionate player with an impeccable work ethic. Alba is someone that will develop her game a lot in our program. She has great size and plays a very offensive style which is what our program prides itself on. Alba is an amazing person which will only add to our already fantastic team dynamic."
Cortina-Pou, a 6-1 right-hander, will join the Lady Raiders as a freshman for the 2016-17 season. She has collected a No. 42 best open Spanish ranking and held a 1,116 doubles ranking by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA).
Cortina-Pou amassed 14 regional championships from 2015-16 in her native Spain and was a semifinalist at two WTA 10.0 doubles tournaments. She also was a quarterfinalist in three U16 Tennis Europe events which included the U16 Spanish Championship.
"I love tennis, and I had no doubt that my place was with the Texas Tech program," Cortina-Pou said. "I'm sure that I will be able to grow with these amazing coaches, teammates and facilities. I'm really excited to be a Lady Raider, and I can't wait to start next season."
Texas Tech finishes the regular season and its five-match road swing next weekend against Iowa State (Friday -- 3 p.m. CT) and West Virginia (Sunday -- 9 a.m. CT). The Big 12 Tournament will be hosted by Oklahoma State from April 28-May 1.
