Red Raiders Ready For Big 12 Golf Championships

TRINITY, Texas -- The Texas Tech men's golf team will travel to Trinity, Texas, this weekend for the 2016 Big 12 Golf Championships, to be held for the sixth time at Whispering Pines Golf Club.The Red Raiders enter the championships as the No. 5 seed and will be paired with No. 6 Kansas. Tech will begin its first round Friday, teeing off 8:22 a.m. on hole No. 10. The championship will be a 72-hole tournament with 36 holes contested on Friday, 18 on Saturday and 18 on Sunday.

Tech, ranked No. 40 in the nation according to the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, is coming off the 17th team title under Head Coach Greg Sands, an eight-shot victory at El Macero, punctuated by three top-3 individual finishes.
"It is always nice to win," Sands said, after the win. "I thought our first round really propelled us through the last two days. When you have three guys play the way Federico [Zucchetti], Hurly [Long] and Ivan [Ramirez] did, you will be successful."
Of the previous five times the championships were held at Whispering Pines, Tech earned top-5 finishes four times, three of those being top-three finishes, including 2014's runner-up finish which is tied for a program best, along with last year's second-place finish.
Last season, the Red Raiders got All-Big 12 Tournament Team performances from Clement Sordet, Mito Pereira and Wes Artac on their way to a second-place team finish.
Texas Tech is one of five teams in the field ranking in the nation's top 40, according to the Golfweek/Sagarin team rankings
